Hague (ST) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) reiterated the necessity of recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people and establishing their independent state as the only path to achieving justice, stressing that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is important for all countries that want to preserve the global order.
During the hearing sessions held on Wednesday on the legal consequences arising from Israel practices in the occupied Palestine, the representative of the UAE before the ICJ, Lana Nusseibeh, indicated the inability of the UN Security Council t achieve a ceasefire in Gaza despite the fact that more than four months have passed since the aggression and the continuation of Israel violations in Palestine.
Nusseibeh stated: “Gaza is an occupied land and it is the most densely populated country. Its current suffering has been going on for more than four months after 17 years of siege, and that 2.3 million people are suffering from a humanitarian catastrophe as a result of the Israeli attacks, the destruction of homes, hospitals and schools, and the displacement of families.”
Nusseibeh called on the Security Council to take binding decisions to stop the Israeli violations and end the suffering of the Palestinian people.
She stressed that Israel prevents free access of Palestinians to the places of worship in clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, in addition to establishing settlements and attacks by settlers and the occupation authorities.
The public sessions of the ICJ will continue until the 26th of this month to listen to the briefings of 52 countries in addition to the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the League of Arab States.
These sessions come in the context of the UN General Assembly’s request to obtain an advisory opinion from the ICJ on the Israeli colonial occupation of the State of Palestine, including Al-Quds.
