UAE delegate to the United Nations: The chemical file in Syria is one of the most politicized files in the Security Council
New York (ST): The representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, confirmed that the chemical file in Syria is still one of the most politicized files in the Security Council, calling on all parties to work in a spirit based on the technical principles upon which the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was established, including compatibility and non-politicization.
Nusseibeh said during a session of the Security Council on the chemical file in Syria: “In this month of the year 1993, the Secretary-General opened the door for signing the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in Paris, and 130 countries signed it at that time, which indicates the existence of a broad consensus in the international community which makes this treaty one of the most important historical achievements in the field of disarmament, but today the Syrian chemical file is unfortunately still one of the most politicized files in this Council.
Nusseibeh reiterated her country’s firm position represented in its rejection and explicit condemnation of the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances by anyone and anywhere, as their use constitutes a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and international law, stressing that making tangible progress in this file requires engaging in constructive dialogue.
