WASHINGTON, (ST)- The United States on Monday appointed a new special envoy for Syria.
AFP quoted US Secretary of State John Kerry as saying that “Michael Ratney was named as the new US Special Envoy for Syria.”
Michael Ratney, an Arabic speaker who served as US consul general in occupied al-Quds (Jerusalem), and as a diplomat in Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco and Qatar, replaces Daniel Rubinstein. Before Rubinstein, who has been tapped as US ambassador to Tunisia, Robert Ford served in the post.
Ford is one of the most notable makers of US policy in Syria. He was officially appointed as an ambassador in Damascus in 2010, and since then he has played a main role in contacts between Obama’s administration and the armed terrorist organizations in Syria.
