Two candidates for the Tunisian presidency: severing relations with Syria is a strategic mistake and we will restore it in case of winning the elections
Mohsen Marzouk the head of “Tunisia Project” party, and the resigning Tunisian Defense Minister Abdel Karim Zubeidi announced that they would work to restore relations with Syria if they win. The two candidates stressed that Tunisia’s severance of these relations was a strategic mistake.
In an interview with Sputnik, Marzouk said, “We have always had historical and good relations with Syria, I don’t think that there were any logical reasons to sever these relations”.
Marzouk pointed out that the current semi-parliamentary system in Tunisia does not allow the existence of an executive authority which is capable of taking quick and united decisions.
In response to reports by some Tunisian media that some international alliances are behind some of the candidates, he said: “This happened in 2014 in the context of the conflict of axes in the Arab region. But in all cases, the Tunisian national political process must be distanced from the foreign influences”.
Regarding the Russian-Tunisian relations, Marzouk stressed the need to strengthen these relations in all fields, especially in economy.
In his turn, Zubaidi said that there are about 5,000 Tunisians living in Syria and if I win the elections I will seek to reopen the Tunisian Embassy with reference to the fact that there is now a consulate that works to provide only administrative services.
The Independent High Commission for Election in Tunisia decided to organize the presidential election after the announcement of the death of President Beji Caid Essebsi on the 25th of July. The date of the elections will be on 15th of September.
The interim Tunisian President Mohamed Nasser signed a decree concerning the invitation of voters to the presidential elections of 2019. And the competition for the presidency is expected to be intense between Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, the resigning Defense Minister Abdelkarim Zubeidi, former Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa and former President Moncef Marzouki.
