Tunisian Parliament Calls for Restoring Diplomatic Ties with Syria

TUNIS, (ST)- Four Tunisian Parliamentary blocs on Thursday submitted a draft  decision that calls for restoring diplomatic ties with Syria, urging the Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi to practice his constitutional authorities and adopt necessary procedures in this regard.

According to Tunis Africa News Agency (Agence Tunis Afrique Presse), the blocs of al-Hurra, the Popular Front, the Free National Union and the Afaq Tunis submitted the daft decision to the Tunisian Parliament’s office in order to be passed to a plenary session for voting.

The initiative came on the basis of  President Essebsi’s announcement during his election campaign in which he promised to restore diplomatic ties with Syria in a bid to correct the mistake of former Tunisian President al-Mounsef al-Marzouki who ordered cutting Tunisia’s ties with Syria.

The draft reiterates the importance of cooperation between the institutions of the two countries in different fields mainly in the fight against terrorism and in ensuring protection from terrorism danger.
