The Umayyah Folklore Group of the Department of Theatres and Music at the Ministry of Culture revived the traditional Syrian wedding through the concert it has recently performed at Al-Hamra Theater in Damascus.
“As part of the Umayyah group’s effort to preserve heritage and folklore in dance, singing or costumes, we staged the Syrian wedding show, which included various dancing sketches between Sufi, Malawi and Samah dances. Members of the band also presented some folk dances representing the Syrian geography as a whole, to conclude with mixing weddings in various Syrian regions,” Taiseer Ali, director of the Umayyah Folklore Band said in a statement to Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Ali pointed out that the performances aims to design choreographies that belong to the heritage without distorting it and to add movements that would benefit the theatrical state of the performances.
With regard to the presence of dancers of old ages within the band, Ali clarified that Umayyah Group suffers from the absence of new young dancers who are permanently committed to the band in its ongoing rehearsals and all its performances, stating that the permanent dancers of the band are making great efforts to continue their performances.
