The Armenian Orthodox Archbishopric of Aleppo Diocese and its dependencies, yesterday organized a torchlight march from Al-Midan neighborhood to the cemeteries of the Armenian Orthodox community, to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the genocide committed by the Ottomans against the Armenians in 1915.
The Metropolitan of the Armenian Orthodox Diocese of Aleppo and its dependencies, Makar Ashkaryan, pointed out in a statement that the Armenians collectively commemorate the genocide to demand their legal rights and to emphasize their rise again despite everything that happened to them throughout history, before the eyes of the entire world which kept silent regarding this genocide as it doing today regarding the crimes being committed against the oppressed peoples.
The Archbishop of Aleppo and its dependencies of the Armenian Catholics, Bishop Boutros Mirayati, explained that demanding the rights of the affected Armenian people represents a call to prevent injustice and violations against not only the Armenians, but also all the peoples who are suffering, including the Palestinian people.
The Head of the Armenian Protestant community in Syria, Reverend Dr. Harutyun Sulaimian, spoke about Syria’s pivotal and fundamental role in embracing the displaced Armenians. Syria became their homeland to compensate them for what they lost in their ancestors’ homeland.
The head of the Syrian-Armenian Parliamentary Friendship Committee at the People’s Assembly, Dr. Lucy Asknian, spoke about the material and moral rights of the Armenians. She noted that demanding the Armenians’ rights puts countries defending human rights in front of a challenge to take action and don’t remain silent.
The march also included placing flowers on the memorial of the martyrs and a cultural event inspired by the occasion.
