To Achieve environmental and economic sustainability, an engineering student designs a device to recycle plastic waste

To solve the problem of the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic packaging and waste that filled the agricultural lands, rivers and beaches, and in the absence of a culture of recycling, a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering “Textile Industries” at the University of Damascus, Muayad Shahrour, designed and implemented a polyester refining device.

Shahrour explained that the idea of his project is based on designing and implementing a device for producing polyester filaments from plastic waste “PET”, which are used in the manufacture of many important and basic products, such as the production of yarns, non-woven fabrics, thermal insulation materials, appliances, sports equipment, and furniture.

For his part, Dr. Taher Qadar, Head of the Department of Textile Industries Mechanics Engineering and Technologies at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Damascus University, indicated that the project provides a raw material that replaces the imported ones at a low price, based on semi-free resources.

The project entitled “Design and Implementation of the Polyester Refining Device” participated in the exhibition of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for projects, which was held last month at the University of Damascus, with the participation of 195 projects from Syrian public and private universities.
