Three Syrian students win Russian classical prose competition

The students: Taj Zahra, Mohamed Saleh and Daniel Mayhoub won the Russian Classical Prose Competition organized annually by the Russian Ministry of Education “National Theater Administration Jivaya Classica”.

Students from 80 countries whose students learn Russian as a second language participate in the competition.

Regarding Syria’s participation, the first instructor of the Russian language course, Engineer Bassam Tawil in the Ministry of Education, said that 58 male and female students from 10 to 17 years of age participated in the competition, which was held at the Russian Cultural Center in Damascus, from the five governorates of Damascus, Daraa, Homs, Tartous and Lattakia. Tawil indicated that the competition took place yesterday, where each participant presented a prose passage in coordination with the teachers of the Russian language in the participating governorates.

Tawil pointed out that the three winners will participate in a week-long entertainment trip to Moscow with the winners from other countries, while the rest of the participants will receive certificates of appreciation and books in the Russian language in appreciation of their participation in order to encourage them to continue, stressing the importance of the competition in developing the skills and abilities of students who learn the Russian language.

Tawil indicated that the texts were evaluated at the governorate level by a committee formed in the Ministry of Education as a first stage. In the last stage, the three winning entries were selected by a jury that included Bokov Timofey Alexandrovich from the Russian Embassy in Damascus and Dr. Natalia Alexandrovna Fedotova, a lecturer in the Russian Language Department at Damascus University and a representative of the Association of National Teachers of the Russian Language.
