Madrid-(ST)- Thousands of Spanish people demonstrated in the capital, Madrid, in solidarity with the Palestinian people and in rejection of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, demanding the severing of Spanish relations with the Zionist entity and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The demonstration, called for by about thirty groups, unions, local councils and political organizations, comes as part of the marches commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, which led to the displacement of nearly 700,000 Palestinians from their homes in 1948.
The demonstrators demanded that their country’s government recognize the independent Palestinian state and sever ties with “Israel,” chanting slogans including: “It is not a war, it is genocide,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will triumph,” and “Stop genocide in Palestine.”
For her part, spokeswoman for “Against the flow Association “ , Vivi Rivas, expressed her regret that Spain continues to maintain its diplomatic and commercial relations with “Israel.” She said: “It is not enough to recognize the State of Palestine because this government which describes itself as progressive, continues to maintain commercial and diplomatic relations with “Israel”, it is still within NATO and mainly supports it.”
In turn, Podemos candidate for the European elections and former Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, during her participation in the demonstration, stressed the demand of the Spanish government to sever diplomatic relations with “Israel” immediately, criticizing the hypocrisy of the Spanish government, which recognizes the Palestinian state and at the same time says that “Israel is a friend.”
