The withdrawal of US forces from Syria will help stabilize the situation, says Lavrentiev

ASATANA, (ST) – The Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev affirmed that the withdrawal of the US occupation forces from Syria will help stabilize the situation there.

Lavrentiev said in statements to reporters ahead of the start of the 19th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format that Turkey did not inform Russia in advance of conducting its air operation in Syria and Iraq, and this issue will be discussed during the Astana meeting. He called on the Turkish regime to exercise restraint in order to prevent an escalation of tension in northern and northeastern Syria and the entire Syrian territories.

Regarding the mechanism for delivering humanitarian aid to Syria across the borders, Lavrentiev said that Russia still believes that this mechanism is outdated and must be abandoned.

Lavrentiev also said that the information reported in the Western media regarding that the Syrian army targeting, with Russian participation, areas in the de-escalation zone in Idlib is false.

The Russian representative indicated that the West is trying to exploit the Syrian file as one of the issues in confronting the Russian Federation.
