The winners of Fakhri Al Baroudi Award for Young Historians for 2019 are announced

Damascus History Foundation has announced Fakhri Al-Baroudi Award for Young Historians for 2019, which aims at encouraging young people to conduct researches related to the history of the city of Damascus in the fields of politics, economics, social, culture, heritage, art and architecture. The researches are scheduled to cover the era between 1860 and 2000.

Nayef Saeed Al-Jibai won the first place for his research “The City of Damascus Strangers;  aspects of their role in enhancing the city’s economy between 1860 and 1918”. The research provided brief glimpses on the role played by residents, who came to Damascus, in its economy and on the important events in the city which marked this period of time.

 

The second place was shared equally between two researches, the first entitled the “Syrian will against France during the mandate”, by Abdul Karim Mamoun Al-Qadiri, and the second entitled, “Half past eight Damascus time,” by Maher Ihsan Al-Mounes which documents the journey of  radio and television in the transmission and spread of news during the period from 1951 to 1979 in Damascus.

The third place was won by Muhammad Mulham Al-Kharboutli, for his research of “scenes from the schools of Damascus in the Ottoman and French periods, between 1878 and 1948, and the art of printing in primary education”.

It is worth mentioning that the “History of Damascus” institution named the award after Fakhri Al-Baroudi  “Fakhri Al-Baroudi  Award for Young Historians” in recognition of his national personality. The award aims to encourage the 20 to 35 age group whereas any young person who meets the age requirement can apply to the competition with any one research topic on the history of Damascus.
