The UAE Mission to the UN welcomes Syria’s return to the Arab League

New York (ST) – The Political Coordinator at the United Arab Emirates Mission to the United Nations Ghasaq Shaheen welcomed Syria’s return to the League of Arab States and the resumption of its participation in its meetings and activities.
Shaheen, during a session of the Security Council held on Monday concerning the Chemical file in Syria, welcomed the decision to readmit Syria to the League of Arab States, saying this will help promote Arab solutions to Arab crises while restoring security and stability to the region. She expressed the hope that this will pave the way for a solution to the Syrian crisis through a clear Arab approach.
She reaffirmed the need for a meaningful dialogue between the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Syria.
Shaheen called on the Council to “embody a spirit of cooperation”, reminding delegates of OPCW’s technical and foundational principles, which include consensus and non-politicization.
She stressed the importance of moving forward with holding comprehensive consultations between the two parties, noting that ISIS continues to launch attacks that pose serious threats to the security of Syria.
“The Council must examine the effectiveness of the recurring meetings on the Syrian chemical file, especially when there are no real developments”, she said, proposing that the Council should look into holding meetings on this issue every three months as needed.

The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) welcomed the return of Syria to the Arab League and the resumption of its participation in the meeting and the activities of the league.

The presidency of the union said in a statement published on its website:” Based on the absolute belief in the Arab unity and in unifying the Arab stances in word and deed as the only way to confront global challenges and accelerating international changes, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union welcomes the announcement by the League of Arab States of the return of the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic to the Arab League.”

The Union stressed that this decision reflects the keenness of the Arab brothers on the stability, safety, Arabism, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of brotherly Syria, reiterating its rejection of the external interventions that have contributed to the exacerbation of the suffering of the Syrian people in the light of the spread of terrorism and extremism.
