The Turkish regime continues its seizure of the Syrian share of the Euphrates and Khabur waters

On May 3rd, the Turkish regime continued its crimes by stealing  large quantities of the water of the Euphrates and Khabur Rivers and prevented them from flowing towards Syria.

The Khabur River is the main source of water for irrigation in the Governorate of Hasakah.

The Director of Water Resources in Al-Hasakah, Eng. Abdul Aziz Amin said: “The Turkish regime’s breach of the agreement signed with Syria regarding the distribution of water shares in the Euphrates River.” 

Amin said that the normal flow during this period of the year is estimated between 5 and 8 cubic meters per second for Al-KhabourRiver.

The agreement signed with the Turkish side in 1987 stipulates that the water supply in the Euphrates River from Turkey to Syria should not be less than 500 cubic meters per second to operate the electricity turbines in the Euphrates Dam.

For his part, the Director of Agriculture in Al-Hasakah, Engineer Rajab Salama, pointed out that large areas of agricultural land have left investment as a result of the suspension of irrigation projects on the bed of the Khabur River from the city of Ras al-Ain to the Markada village.

Salameh said “the robbery of the Turkish regime on large quantities of water from the Euphrates River coincided with the Turkish occupation mercenaries’ seizure of large areas of agricultural land in the Ras Al-Ain region, which is classified within the agricultural stability areas with high productivity.

In turn, the director of the General Electricity Company of Hasaka, Eng. Anwar Okla, confirmed that the governorate of Hasakah has no electricity for the fifth day in a row because it depends mainly on the quantities of energy received through the 230 kV voltage line connecting the Tabqa and al-Bawab stations.

Okla pointed out that the company is currently supplying the service lines that are excluded in the governorate, which are water stations , hospitals, furnaces and mills from the quantities produced at the Sweidiyah generation facility.

In his turn, expert in water resources Aziz Mikhail said that the goal of confining water and preventing its entry into the Syrian lands comes within the Turkish regime’s plan to implement the so-called Al-Kab Project.

He added that the Al-Kab  Project includes thousands of hectares extending from the state of Urfa to the lands opposite to the city of Malikiyah in the far northeast of Hasakah.

These measures led to a stop in the flow of the Al-Jarjab, Al-Zarkan and Tal Halaf rivers, which are main tributaries of the Al-Khabur River, which has almost completely dried up.

The water aggression committed by the Turkish regime comes in the context of its continuous attacks on the Syrian people.
