“Mawlawi” dancing and religious chanting “muwashshahat” are part of the Syrian and Damascene traditions, especially in the month of Ramadan and the similar religious occasions where dancing and chanting constitute an integral part of the social rituals and the vocabulary of the intangible heritage of the region, with its spiritual, artistic, musical, literary and cultural dimensions.
As the month of Ramadan approaches, singing and Mawlawi groups from different governorates are preparing to perform chanting and Sufi dances. Beit Jabri in Old Damascus hosts these groups, and they work diligently to revive this heritage.
About 15 singing groups from Damascus, Aleppo and Homs competed with time to prepare a variety of religious songs, muwashshahat and Mawlawi dances throughout the month of Ramadan with the aim of reviving the Syrian heritage in its various aspects.
