The Security Council approves a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan

New York (ST) – The Security Council approved today a resolution presented by 10 countries calling for an “immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip” during the month of Ramadan only, and that will lead to a “permanent ceasefire”.

The resolution stresses the urgent need to increase the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip and remove all obstacles to its delivery.

The resolution received the support of 14 countries, while the US abstained from voting.

Before voting on the resolution, the US and European countries blocked a Russian initiative to add the phrase “permanent ceasefire” to the text of the resolution.

In the same context, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the UN Security Council’ move towards assuming its responsibilities to protect the Palestinian people, who have been subjected to a crime of genocide that has been deliberately committed by the Israeli occupation entity for more than 171 days.

The Ministry affirmed that the adoption of the immediate ceasefire resolution is a step in the right direction to stop the aggression completely, the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Gaza, and the return of the displaced to their areas and neighbourhoods, despite the destruction and pain.
