The restoration project at Tekkiye Sulaymaniyah aims to solve problems related to ancient buildings

Damascus, (ST) – The Director of the Restoration works in Tekkiye (hospice)  Sulaymaniyah, Anton Shniara affirmed that the strategy of the Tekkiye restoration project is based on finding solutions to all problems related to the needs of the ancient buildings in terms of operating services in a correct manner based on their identity and their architectural, historical and cultural character.

Shniara said in a statement to SANA reporter that the site of Tekkiye, adjacent to the course of the Barada River has been subjected during the past decades to a drop in the level of groundwater due to the scarcity of water sources. “This matter led to erosion of the soil layers below the foundation level of the buildings from the ceilings and domes of the Tekkiye, its columns, and walls,” he added.

Shniara said that part of the Tekkiye will be a place that embraces owners of traditional crafts and activities related to traditional industries, after the completion of its restoration operations.

The governor of Damascus, Eng. Muhammad Tariq Krishati told SANA that after the rehabilitation of the Tekkiye Sulaymaniyah, craftsmen will return to parts and so it can remain  a cultural, heritage, historical and tourist destination.
