The political solution to the crisis in Syria necessary, says Lavrov

Moscow, (ST)   – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated the need to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria and implement UN Resolution 2254.

“We discussed the situation in Syria and agreed on the need to find a political solution to the crisis in it and implement UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” Lavrov said during a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Abdul Rahman Al -Thani.

Resolution 2254, which was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council in December 2015, affirms that the Syrians are the ones who determine the future of their country on their own, without any outside interference, and that terrorist organizations are outside any political process.

Regarding the new US sanctions against Russia, Lavrov indicated that the Russian response will come later and that it will be all inclusive. He said that “the new US sanctions that have been imposed on Russian individuals and companies are not surprising, “a hostile policy towards our country. Of course, the response will come, and it will apply on all the Russian relations with the United States, as the U.S has proven to be unreliable as a partner.”
