Aleppo (ST) – Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Mor Ignatius Ephrem II opened on Sunday the Syriac Orthodox Church of St. George in the Syriac neighborhood in Aleppo after its restoration as a result of the damage it sustained from the earthquake disaster. The event coincided with the opening of the secondary section at the Second Bani Taghlib School.
In his speech during the celebratory mass, Patriarch Ephrem II noted the symbolism of the church restoration event as a sincere expression of the Syriacs’ will to remain on their land.
For his part, Bishop of the Syriac Orthodox Diocese of Aleppo and Environs, Mor Boutros Kassis, stressed the peculiarity of St. George Church in giving a unique picture of the will of the Syriac people to cling to life again.
In turn, the senior priest in the Syriac Orthodox Diocese of Aleppo, Father Shukri Touma, stated that ST. George Church and the school next to it represent a single bloc in the Syriac Orthodox journey in Aleppo, as they combined spiritual, social, and educational formation to highlight the effective role of the Church in civilizing and advancing society for the sake of Syria’s development and prosperity.
It is noteworthy that the Syriac Orthodox Church of St. George was built in 1926 and remained a wooden building until 1932 where the foundations of the stone church were laid in the summer of 1932, and walls similar to the style of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in the city of Edessa were erected on it, and it underwent restoration several times.
