The General Assembly adopts a resolution affirming Palestine’s right to full membership in the United Nations

The UN General Assembly today adopted by majority a resolution confirming the right of the state of Palestine to obtain full membership in the UN, and recommending that the Security Council positively reconsider this issue.

143 countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, 8 countries and the Israeli occupation entity opposed it, while 25 abstained from voting.

The resolution provides that the state of Palestine is eligible for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the charter, and therefore should be admitted to membership in the United Nations. Accordingly, the resolution recommends that the Security Council review this issue positively, in the light of this resolution and in the light of the recommendation of the International Court of Justice issued on May 28, 1948 and in full accordance with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations.

The resolution reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to establish an independent state of Palestine.

It called on the international community to exert renewed and coordinated efforts aimed at achieving without delay an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 and a just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian cause in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 2334. It requested the secretary-general to take the necessary measures to implement this resolution.
