The Economic Impact of Agricultural Research in Facing Food Security Challenges

Under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Salhab, “head  of the Scientific Agricultural Research Center in Lattakia.” An indicative scientific symposium entitled “The Economic Impact of Agricultural Research in Facing Food Security Challenges” was implemented

For the Economic and Social Studies Research Department at the Agricultural Scientific Research Center.

Dr.. Attia Arab, Associate Head of the Research Center, explained the importance of this symposium because the issue of food comes at the forefront of issues of great global concern, and is constantly increasing as a result of many factors surrounding food production and demand. Environmental changes and security crises are the most important factors that increase the risks of food insecurity. The war on Syria in its security, economic and political forms negatively affected the national economy in general and food security in particular. Agriculture is the main axis of the Syrian economy, and it is the main element for achieving food security and sustainable development. Previous experience indicated that the farmers’ steadfastness on their lands was a major factor in facing the unjust economic blockade.

Here, agricultural research must play an important and fundamental role in the agricultural development strategy, which requires strengthening research in the field of increasing productivity in quantity and quality, searching for new resources or maximizing the value resulting from the use of available resources.

During the symposium, presentations were made on (the reality of food security in Syria – ways and methods for measuring the impact of agricultural research on food security – and the impact of agricultural research on reducing the food gap for cereal crops (wheat)..

A presentation was made on the impact of agricultural research on reducing the food gap for basic food crops.
