The Damascene Rose

If you visit Syria in Spring then the scents that will long linger after your visit has passed are those belonging to the Damascene Rose and the Damascene Jasmine.Growing in the most unexpected of places they give Damascus a special signature – a uniqueness that brings forth memories of a romanticized past .A magical realism almost.

In 2019 UNESCO placed the Damascene Rose( also referred to as the Damask Rose) on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The practices and craftsmanship associated with the Damascene rose are mainly practiced by farmers and families in Al-Mrah village, in rural Damascus, who possess expert knowledge of producing essential oils and traditional medicine from the Damask Rose, among other things, as well as the village community and families who organize the yearly Damascene Rose Festival.
Rose picking is a happy social event where farmers congregate exchanging tales and singing songs almost lightheaded from the heady scent of the Damascene Rose. Many are the uses of the Damascene Rose like rose syrup, jam ,rose infused tea and rose water .In addition it is said that the Damascene Rose has numerous medicinal benefits.Touching almost all senses the Damascene Rose is a joy to behold.
