The Central Bank of Syria launches the electronic payment system through the banking sector

Damascus (ST): The Central Bank of Syria launched the electronic payment system through the banking sector, in a ceremony held in the Umayyah Hall at the Sheraton Damascus Hotel. The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Dr. Muhammad Essam Hazemeh, stressed in a speech that the launch of the electronic payment system in its first phase comes after intensive efforts over the past years by the government, the Central Bank and operating banks, and there will be other stages later that include all financial institutions operating in the banking sector.

Hazemeh pointed out that the first stage was to link the electronic payment systems in four private banks, namely, the Syrian International Islamic Bank, the Levant, Syria, the Gulf and Al-Baraka Syria, in cooperation with the Central Bank and the Fatora (Bill) Company for electronic payment.

Hazemeh indicated that the process of linking the four banks contributes to providing electronic payment services to more than 575,000 customers with these banks, stressing that the citizen with the bank account will not bear any expenses for card payments, as commissions are paid by the beneficiaries of electronic payment services.

Hazemeh pointed out that once the second electronic payment company is completed, electronic payment systems will be linked between about 12 operating banks and then with public sector banks that are making intense efforts to complete the link between them, which leads to the expansion of the segment of beneficiaries of electronic payment services.
