The archeological city of Salkhad

Among the activities of Shahba’s 8th festival for Tradition and Art in Sweida and in cooperation with the Cultural Center in Salkhad a special fair on the governorate’s life during the 19th century was organized.

The fair which was organized by Mr. tawfik al-safade  included a lecture under the title of  “Salkhad in the Arab Poetry”.

The lecture was delivered by the researcher and teacher Mohammd Jabir.

The researcher during his lecture gave a briefing on certain poems that mentioned Salkhad in Arab Literature from the poetry of al-Nabegha al-thobyani up till now.

He also referred to the important role Salkhad city played throughout history, namely in military position.

”The famous archaeological citadel of Salkhad which is still standing up till now is constituting a clear example on the city’s distinguished geographical position and role.” the teacher added in his lecture.

He also spoke about the famous Arab poets, namely al-thobyani, al-Farazdak and Handala ” whom described Salkhad city as the city of beauty in their poems.

The researcher also said that the archaeological classified Salkhad as the second city during al-Nabati era.

”The city throughout history was distinguished by its red wine.” Mr. Jabir also said during the lecture, referring to the excavation works revealing the city’s important commercial role.

The researcher also spoke about the agriculture of grapes in sweida which distinguished the governorate. He also referred to the main role the agriculture of grapes plays in financing the inhabitants of the city.

”The foreigner archeological Pink Hard also referred in his notes on sweida about the existence of grapes’ scripture on all the archeological sites in the city, namely in the villages of Shaqqa, Qanawat and Ayyon.” Mr Jabir also cited.

”Salkhad citadel also occupied a main position in the poetry of al-Tarmahi in Hadramout.”, the researcher also said, adding that the red wine of Salkhad was mentioned in many poems in Arab Literature.

The attendants during the event also watch a documentary on Soltan Basha al-Atrash the leader of the Great Syrian Revolution.

It is noteworthy that the movie directed by Ghassan Shamitt and produced by the General Institution for movies.
