The annual spring fair crowns the brilliant talents of young people at the Citadel of Damascus

From the northwest corner of the oldest capital known to history, and a few steps away from the paved stone road in the old city, where the Damascus Citadel is located, a ray of contemporary art emerges to become the solid link between the culture of the past and the creativity of the youth of the future.

The Throne Hall in the Damascus Citadel hosts the annual Spring Exhibition for 2022, which is held by the Directorate of Fine Arts in the Ministry of Culture in support of young plastic artists as an opportunity to take the hand of this promising group and with the aim of renewing and continuing the artistic movement and developing it in various fields of visual creativity.

The exhibition, which witnessed a remarkable turnout from the generation of young artists, who flocked to attend it amid a standing ovation from prominent plastic artists in the Syrian plastic art scene, included 47 works that varied between works of photography with multiple techniques, between oil, acrylic and collage, in ways that ranged between expressive and realistic and close to abstraction, while the graphic works included multiple engraving techniques printing.

The Minister of Culture Dr. Lubana Mushawah confirmed that the annual spring exhibition is an embodiment of Syria and the Ministry of Culture’s embrace of young artists, as this year was distinguished by the quality of the paintings selected by the jury at the expense of the number that witnessed a decrease compared to previous exhibitions, explaining that the plastic schools to which the paintings belonged were characterized with novelty and modernity, what helps the artist to move from a style he is accustomed to to new creative styles to continue renewal and innovation in the end.

Head of the Department of Exhibitions and Collections at the Directorate of Fine Arts, Rana Hussein, explained that the exhibition is a collection of artworks of various techniques, showing the interest and compatibility of the Ministry of Culture with the young generation of academic artists, graduates of colleges and institutes of fine arts, to give them the opportunity to present their fruitful experiences and urge them to provide the best by sharing their ideas and methods.
