The 16th international meeting on Syria under the Astana Formula starts in Nur-Sultan with the participation of the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic

Nur-Sultan (ST): The sixteenth international meeting on Syria under the Astana formula started in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan this morning with the participation of the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, headed by Dr. Ayman Susan, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, arrived in Nur-Sultan yesterday to participate in the two-day meeting.

 

The delegations of the guarantor countries of the Astana process, namely Russia, Iran and the Turkish regime, participate in the meeting, where the Russian delegation is headed by the Special Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation Alexander Lavrentiev and the Iranian delegation headed by the Senior Assistant Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji, while the Turkish regime’s delegation is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal.

Delegations from Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq participated as observer at the ambassadorial level, and the United Nations delegation headed by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Syria Geir Pedersen.

In addition to the main points discussed in all previous Astana meetings, namely the continuation of the fight against terrorism, the issue of the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland and the end of the illegal presence of foreign forces, including the US and Turkish forces on Syrian territory, the agenda of the current meeting also includes developments in the situation in Syria, the political process, the field situation and humanitarian aid, in addition to discussing the economic, social and health situation related to the spread of the corona virus pandemic and the prospects for resuming the work of the Constitutional Discussion Committee in Geneva.

The final statement of the 15th international meeting of the Astana formula, which was held in the Russian city of Sochi on February 16-17, affirmed that the guarantor states renew their strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity and integrity of Syrian territory and the continuation of cooperation until the elimination of terrorist organizations in it.
