Terrorism will Sooner or Later Backfire on Its Supporters -Al-Jaafari

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Bashar Al-Jaafari has stressed that terrorism will sooner or later backfire on the countries which have financed and supported it, reiterating that UN General Assembly member countries should shoulder their responsibility towards halting operations of smuggling weapons, ammunitions and terrorists into Syria across borders with neighboring counties.

In a statement during the meeting of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security held on the sidelines of the UNGA’s 71st Session on Tuesday, al-Jaafari warned against the spread of the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in the world particularly the nuclear weapon and against excluding Israel from the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

According to al-Jaafari, the most dangerous phenomenon that threatens the world of today is the crime of supporting, arming, training and financing blacklisted terrorist groups by some countries including UNSC member states. He noted that these supported terrorist groups are using chemical weapons in their attacks.

Israel Won’t Join NPT as long as US, France, Britain and others are protecting its nuclear program

Al-Jaafari said that Israel won’t join the NPT as long as the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Australia and other states are protecting its nuclear program and contributing to its development and as long as these countries cover Israel’s non compliance with UN resolutions relating to giving up nuclear weapons.

He added that foiling the NPT Review Conference by the US and Britain was a moral scandal, because it provided protection to the continuity of Israel’s possessing of nuclear weapon and ensured a cover to Israel’s refusal to joining the NPT, which is considered a flagrant violation of all the treaty’s provisions and it indicates the nuclear hypocrisy policy adopted by the above mentioned nuclear states.

The Syrian diplomat called on UN member states to work as to make the Middle East free of nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction, stressing the inalienable right of the NPT states to obtain peaceful nuclear technology in accordance with the treaty’s provisions.

Syrian government condemns using chemical weapons

Al-Jaafari expressed the Syrian government’s condemnation of the crime of using chemical weapons, because Syria believes that such behavior is rejected and has nothing to do with ethics.

He said Syria has joined the Conviction on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons starting from its belief in seeking a WMD-free Middle East, pointing out that Syria has been adherent to all its commitments resulted from joining the Conviction despite the difficult circumstances it is passing through.

He said that the third and not final report presented by the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) and the charges it made against Syria regarding the use of “chlorine in Talmenes and Sarmin” areas is full of gaps and contrasts that refute the conclusions reached by the report.

Al-Jaafari said that some states have used the report to defame Syria despite the fact that the report doesn’t include any material evidence on the usage of chemical weapons or on those who used it, taking into consideration that all the areas studied by the Mechanism are under the control of the terrorist groups and the report didn’t include any medical reports on the cases of people who allegedly were affected by toxic materials despite that they were taken to medical centers.

Al-Jaafari added that the report mentioned that the proposed videos on Talmenes incident were filmed on April 23rd, 2014 while the alleged incident took place on April 21st and this proves that the videos were fabricated. Besides, the report also said that TNT material was found inside cylinders and these results don’t have a logical explanation.

He said that Syria sent notes to the JIM and to the Security Council about the gaps in the third report, clarifying that the report has been built on conclusions on the possibility of using chlorine by the Syrian side and the conclusions have been built on false testimonies by witnesses provided by the armed terrorist groups.

He went on saying that what was mentioned in the report exposes the fabrications made by those who support the armed terrorist groups, referring to the press conference of the Russian Defense Minister in which he talked about the intentions of the terrorist groups in Syria to use chemical materials against the army and the civilians in the neighborhoods of Aleppo.
