Tehran renews call for Ryiadh to stop war on Yemen

A senior Iranian official has condemned Saudi Arabia’s relentless air raids on Yemen, calling on Riyadh to put an end to its war campaign which has resulted in the destruction of Yemen’s infrastructure and deaths of civilians.

“Saudi Arabia’s military attack on Yemen was beneath the dignity of a Muslim country,”  Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, said in a meeting with a number of Jordanian political and media figures in Tehran on Tuesday.

He also lashed out at certain sides for fomenting violence in the region through their meddlesome policies as well as military acts.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian also reaffirmed Iran’s policy of backing Palestinians and the resistance front.

The Jordanian delegation, for its part, praised Iran’s support for the resistance front, unity among regional countries and fight against enemy plots aimed at sowing the seeds of discord among regional countries.

Saudi Arabia launched its military air strikes against Yemen on March 26 without a UN mandate to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is a close ally of Riyadh.

Suffering from the consequences of the Saudi military aggression for more than two months, Yemen is now facing a crisis as the Riyadh air raids are destroying the impoverished Arab country’s infrastructure and leaving thousands of Yemenis without food, water and basic needs.

According to the UN estimates, there are currently 12.5 million food-insecure people in Yemen.

Almost 2,000 people have been killed and more than 500,000 displaced as a result of the violence in Yemen, according to the UN.
