TARTOUS, Oct.3, (ST)- The Directorate of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Tartous expects that the production of citrus fruits for the current agricultural season will reach about 196,086 tons.
The Syrian Arab News Agency quoted Mohammad Hasan, the head of the Plant Production Department in the Tartous Agriculture Directorate, as saying: “The areas planted with citrus trees of all kinds in Tartous governorate this year reached 9,335 hectares, and the total number of trees is about 3,465,749, including 3,360,158 fruit trees.”
He indicated that the climatic changes, such as high temperatures and storms, caused a decline in the production of citrus fruits for this season.
Hasan added that citrus cultivation is the main source of income for a large number of families, as it is cultivated in various regions of Tartous, Safita, Drekish, Banyas and Sheikh Badr, and is also one of the irrigated crops.
It is noteworthy that Tartous governorate produced about 214.709 tons of citrus fruits last season.
