Syrian student wins fountain design contest for Lubyanka Square in Moscow

Moscow – The Syrian student Edris Ali Suleiman won an architectural engineering contest to choose the best fountain design for a square in the Russian capital Moscow.

The third year student at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was awarded for his fountain design for Lubyanka Square in Moscow that is about 900 m north east of Red Square, SANA reported.

The design consists of a glass obelisk to be built at the center of the square 5-6 m below ground level, Edris said.

Water flows at the foot of the obelisk and gathers in a small-sized sculptured store, he added, noting that the design is quite appropriate and suitable for the organizational planning of the city especially that Lubyanka Square is currently accessed through tunnels.

Founded in 1960, the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia is an educational and research institution located in southern Moscow. It is ranked by the Ministry of Education of Russia as the country’s third-best university after Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University. Its stated objective during the height of the Cold War was to help developing nations, mainly in Asia, Africa and South America, by providing higher education and professional training.
