Syrian expatriate runner Imad Barakat has won the second position Dubai Desert Road Run for the 60-year-old runners category.
The event witnessed wide participation by runners from different parts of the world.
Barakat was born in Damascus in 1963. In 1999, he moved to Slovakia to live there. Despite having the Slovak citizenship, he insists on representing his homeland, Syria, at international marathons to raise the Syrian flag at international events.
In 2003, Barakat held the world champion title for coming first in the Marathon of the Sands in Morocco, also known as the Sahara Marathon, for the distance of 250 km. He also ranked second four times in Oman Desert Marathon for running a distance of 165 km. Barakat also came forth in Austria International Marathon for a distance of 75 km and ranked third for seven years in the marathons held in Slovakia and other European countries.
