Establishing a highly developed research center in Damascus is an old dream that Syrian ophthalmologist Dr. Youssef Youssef seeks to achieve with the aim of conveying the expertise he gained as director of the Scientific Research Center for Eye Surgery of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Youssef, who was recently honored by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his achievements in the field of ophthalmology, said in a statement to SANA reporter in Moscow: “ I dedicate this honor to my homeland Syria and its leadership”, noting that this honor is a remarkable milestone in his career and a great responsibility for him towards his society to offer more to the people who are in need of medical services.
Dr. Youssef explained that he provides medical services in the center to all patients without exception, indicating that there are great medical capabilities in Russia and that he discussed with the Russian Minister of Higher Education to open an efficiency and expertise department in the center that he heads, not only in the field of ophthalmic surgery, but also in treating aging illnesses.
The Syrian doctor emphasized that he is seeking to realize an old dream of establishing a highly- developed research center in Damascus that would not only serve Syria but the entire Middle East and convey the available expertise and capabilities to Syria.
It is noteworthy that Dr. Youssef was born in Daraa governorate in 1963, graduated from the Institute of Medicine in 1989 and obtained a doctorate in 1998 and a state doctorate in 2000.
Dr. Yousef is currently practicing active surgical work and has performed 40,000 surgeries, most of which involve cataract removal using modern methods and techniques.
