The Syrian Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources has clarified that the stranding of a giant container ship in the Suez Canal and the blockage of the most important waterway in the world has led to the disruption of navigation in the canal for the fourth day in a row, thereby affecting oil supplies to Syria and delaying the arrival of a tanker carrying oil and oil products to the country.
In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said that while waiting the return of normal ship traffic across the Suez Canal- which may take an unknown period of time- the ministry is currently rationalizing the distribution of the available quantities of oil products with the aim maintaining the availability of these products for the longest time possible and ensuring the continuation of providing basic services to the citizens, including in bakeries, hospitals, water stations, communication centers and other vital institutions.
The ministry expressed hope that efforts to free the stuck vessel and open the Suez Canal will succeed as soon as possible so that normal navigation is restored and the awaited oils supplies arrive to Syria without additional obstacles.
