Syrian-Jordanian talks in Amman

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Al-Sheibani, Minister of Defense Murhaf Abu Qasra and Head of General Intelligence Service Anas Khattab arrived in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the first official visit to Jordan to discuss prospects of cooperation and coordination between the two countries.
The Syrian officials held talks with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi in Amman.
In a press conference following the talks, Al-Safadi stressed that Jordan stands by the Syrian people and supports the unity and sovereignty of Syria, reiterating that Syria’s stability is a factor of stability in Jordan.

“Our talks with the Syrian delegation reflected a common desire to build cooperation relations that reflect the historical relations between the two countries,” Al-Safadi said, pointing out that the new administration in Syria faces major challenges and must be given time to confront them.

“We are ready to provide electricity to Syria immediately and we are working to achieve this as soon as possible, Al-Safadi also said.

He added that “there was a breach of water agreements between Jordan and Syria, and we can deal with this issue now”.

For his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Sheibani said “we are working to fulfill Syria’s obligations, achieve the sovereignty of the Syrian people and attain stability for the entire region”.

Al-Shaibani added “we are working to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria, which hinder any partnership that reflects positively on Syrian people”.
He continued by stressing that the new situation in Syria has ended the threats facing Jordan, most notably Captagon smuggling.
Al-Sheibani went on saying “we are working to invest in diversity within Syria to build the future Syrian state, noting that a decision was made to form an expanded preparatory committee for holding the national dialogue that includes comprehensive representation of the Syrian people and that represents the will of the Syrian people.
The minister pointed out the former regime has a legacy of problems with its people and neighboring countries, saying “we will erase this from the memory of the Syrians and neighboring countries”.
He added: The identity of the new Syria will be based on achieving the sovereignty of the people and frank dialogue with neighboring countries.
Al-Shaibani explained that “despite the fall of the Assad regime, sanctions are still targeting the Syrian people and hindering their recovery,” pointing out that the US Treasury’s decision on sanctions represents a breakthrough, but we are waiting for the sanctions to be completely lifted”.
