Syrian-Iranian Talks Focus on Long-Term Strategic Economic Cooperation

TEHRAN, (ST)- Syria and Iran on Saturday held a round of economic talks co-chaired by Syria’s Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil and the Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami.

The talks focused on expanding cooperation in all economic domains and investment.

The two sides reached a deal concerning a draft agreement on long-term strategic economic cooperation.

A-Khalil stressed that both Syria and Iran have real will and determination to boost economic ties, pointing out that economic cooperation between the two countries should be given priority, particularly in the light of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the West on the two countries as to weaken their abilities.

 He affirmed the need to enhance investment, commercial, banking and financial relations as to contribute to economic development in both countries, urging facilitating and consolidating trade exchange.

“We count on a big role by the Iranian companies in Syria’s reconstruction process,” said al-Khalil, clarifying that banking cooperation must be accorded special attention because it is essential for trade and investment cooperation.

On his part, the Iranian minister said Syria and Iran will continue with strong resolve to fight  terrorism until it is completely defeated.

He stressed that strong relations between the two countries help attain security and stability in the region.
Eslami expressed hope that the strategic economic cooperation agreement will by prepared soon, noting that one of the most necessary elements for this agreement is encouraging the Iranian economic sector to work in Syria.

The Iranian minister referred to a plan to hold a conference to which Iranian companies and investors will be invited.
