Syrian Indian relations, deeply-rooted friendship reinforced by the two states’ stands towards combatting terrorism

Damascus (ST): India celebrates today the 72nd anniversary of its announcement as a republic at a time when it is making important achievements in development and economic construction. It also seeks to enhance its position at the  international arena.

The Syrian-Indian relations are becoming stronger at all political, economic and cultural levels, reinforced by India’s stance in support of Syria during the crisis, its standing by Syria against terrorism, its principled  stand regarding respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, commitment to the political solution of the crisis in Syria and rejection of foreign interference in the internal affairs of countries.

The historical ties and the common struggle against colonialism had  a great role in strengthening bilateral relations. The two countries were part of the Non-Aligned Movement, as they coordinated together to preserve the rights and interests of developing countries, and today they continue to offer mutual support at international arenas with regard to issues that serve the interests of the peoples of the two countries.

India has constantly stressed its desire to strengthen cooperation with Syria, especially in the reconstruction process. It also sent humanitarian aid, especially in the health field. Last year it made an initiative to install prosthetic limbs for more than 500 war-wounded in addition to providing medical aid to confront the threat of the Corona pandemic.

India has also continued to grant training scholarships  to Syrian employees in various specializations, as the number of beneficiaries ranged from 70 to 100 trainees annually during the past few years, in addition to the scholarships that have been provided since 2018 to more than a thousand Syrian students in various domains.

India is a parliamentary republic with a multi-party system that gained independence in 1947 and was declared a republic on January 26, 1950  when the constitution took effect.

It is the second largest country in terms of population and seventh in terms of geographical area. It enjoys a diversity of languages, cultures and ethnicities.
