Syrian, Indian Investment Cooperation Discussed

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy General Director of the Syrian Investment Authority (SIA) Dr. Inas al –Umawi discussed here with the Ambassador of the Republic of India in Damascus, Man Mohan Banot, investment opportunities of priority in Syria and the quality of investments that Indian investors want to set up in Syria.

During the meeting at the headquarters of the SIA, Dr. al-Umawi proposed the “formation of a joint economic commission between the two sides to consider projects and investment opportunities and to establish a Joint Syrian- Indian Businessman Council to discuss the activation of joint agreements and mechanisms of bilateral cooperation.”

 Dr. al-Umawi indicated to the development of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, especially in investment, expressing gratitude for the continuous support provided by the Indian government at all levels to Syria, particularly in terms of education.

 “The SIA is looking for partners and new investors from friendly countries to Syria and seek activating a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding signed with these countries,” Dr. al -Umawi said, referring to investment advantages in Decree No. 8 for 2007.

For his part, Mr.Banot confirmed the strong deep relations linking the two countries and historical cooperation between India and Syria, expressing his readiness to exert “major efforts to put the issue of investment cooperation between the two countries into effect especially that Syria is getting ready to enter rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.”

“The meeting aims to provide information about the investment map and opportunities in Syria and about the legislative environment encouraging investment in the country. It also aims at exchanging views, ideas and experience of the two countries in the field of investment promotion,” Mr.  Banot said, noting that he will inform the businessmen in India of what he got of information about investment in Syria and invite them to visit the country to learn more about investment opportunities.”
