DAMASCUS, (ST)_ The Ministry of Electricity signed yesterday a memorandum of understanding with the German Power International company to build a 360 MW gas-fired generation power plant, in the context of the ministry efforts to develop the electrical system and meet the growing demand for energy.
In a statement to SANA Deputy Minister of Electricity Engineer Nidal Qarmosheh said that the signing of the MoU came after a “meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Electricity and the German company in build electric power stations that can operate on traditional sources of renewable energies,” noting that the importance of the memorandum lies in its “compatibility with the Electricity Law No. 32, for 2010 on the general policy of the electricity sector in Syria.”
He explained that the new electricity generation groups “will be connected to the electricity transmission network in Syria in order to supplement the electric power-producing system. and thus contribute to meet part of the growing demand for electricity,” stressing that “this project is the first of fruitful cooperation with the German side in the field of traditionally produced electrical energies to be followed by wind turbines and other electricity generation sources in the future. “
For his part, Chairman of Board of Directors of the German Power International Inc. Richard Wagner expressed his ” company readiness to cooperate with the Syrian side in the establishment of new power stations working on gas or renewable and wind energies.”
By signing several agreements and memorandums of understanding with a number of foreign companies and friendly countries, the Ministry of Electricity seeks to meet electricity sector requirements and development of electric power generation systems, in light of systematic targeting of the country infrastructure at the hands of the armed terrorist organizations.
