Syrian-French Writer Sends Letter of Protest to Macron, Returns Order of Merit to France

Syrian-French writer Adnan Azzam has recently sent a letter of protest to the French President Emmanuel Macron over France’s aggressive policy towards Syria. He has also returned to France the Order of Merit he received on February 16th 2009.

The letter of protest was sent after the French President sent no reply on Azzam’s request- dated February 16th 2018- to meet him in order to explain what is going on in Syria, according to the letter obtained by the Syriatimes e-newspaper.

Azzam referred in his letter to the French troops sent to Syria on April 3rd 2018 without Syrian government’s permission, reminding Macron of the unpleasant end of the French General Henri Gouraud’s aggression on Syria in 1920.

He, in addition, talked about France’s participation in the US-led aggression launched against Syria on April 14th 2018 without UN approval and before verifying the veracity of chemical weapons claims in the Eastern Ghouta of Damascus.

“Such acts of aggression on the sovereignty of a state [Syria], which is a member of UN, pose a threat to the world peace and will put you on trial before the International Criminal Court,” Azzam said.

He hopes that his letter will contribute to making the French president reconsiders the strategic decisions related to France’s policy towards Syria.

French Lawyer Arno Develay commented on what Azzam done by saying: “ The symbolic gesture of Adnan Azzam will lead many persons to express their support and share his personal commitment to see that both the rule of law and the search for truth prevail after all this bloodshed.”
