Syrian Christian sects celebrate Christmas

Christian sects in Syria celebrated Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ the messenger of love and peace and held masses and prayers in churches and places of worship.

The sermons highlighted the meanings associated to the birth of Jesus Christ who embodied the spirit of fraternity, love, peace and benevolence. Sermons also congratulated the people of Syria on the occasion of the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, Christmas and the New Year, SANA reported.

In St. George Syrian Orthodox Church in Damascus, a huge mass was held, headed by the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East Mar Ignatius Aphrem II Karim.
In his sermon, Patriarch Aphrem said that this occasion comes as Syria is in the midst of war waged against it now in its fifth year, expressing his hope that peace will return to all Syrian areas.

“We are looking forward with confidence to the future of our people and our nation and for next generations, praying to God to heal our wounds and return abducted people to their families and their loved ones, among them the two kidnapped bishops: Bishop Paul Yazigi and Syriac Orthodox Bishop John Ibrahim and to preserve Syria under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad,” he said.

Heads of Christian sects implored God to bless Syria and its people and for the souls of Syrian martyrs to rest in peace.
