Syrian children make part of mosaic portrait to be completed in London

Syrian children have gathered in the National Museum of Damascus to make part of a mosaic portrait within a project being carried out by the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) and the Oxford University to disseminate awareness about the importance of the Syrian cultural heritage.

The mosaic portrait will be moved to London to be completed by children studying in British schools, Director of the project in London Rasha Haqqi declared, clarifying that the project aims to disseminate awareness about the importance of the Syrian cultural heritage in Europe and all over the world and about the necessity of offering help to restore the damaged heritage.

“This project comes within the activity of the ‘historic Trafalgar square’ to be held in London on April 19th,” Haqqi added, indicating that the activity includes erection  of a copy of Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph decorated  by using the 3D photogrammetry technique that could be used to restore the damaged Syrian ancient sites.

In this context, Coordinator of the project Tahani Nammora said that the size of the mosaic portrait, which is composed of marble stones, is 1.5mX1.5 m.

“The Syrian children will make part of the mosaic portrait (70cmX80 cm), while the remaining size will be completed by children from eight British schools,” she concluded.
