GENEVA, (ST)- The delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, led by Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, arrived on Sunday in Geneva to take part in the seventh round of the intra-Syrian dialogue due to start Monday.
The six round of Geneva talks held last May included several meetings between the Syrian Arab Republic delegation and the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura. The talks focused on the experts meetings without tackling any of the four baskets discussed in previous rounds.
During the fifth round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, which began in March 31st and lasted eight days, the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic presented several papers to de Mistura, including a paper on the issue of fighting terrorism and another one dealing with general principles of political solution in Syria. However, the “opposition” platforms didn’t provid their answers to any of these papers.
In the fourth round of talks, which concluded in March 3, the parties agreed on a four-basket agenda that included fighting terrorism, governance, constitution and elections.
Yesterday, the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy affirmed that the upcoming Geneva meeting due to start on Monday would discuss the declared four baskets in parallel with continuing technical negotiations about the legal and constitutional matters related to the political process.
