Syrian and Brazilian writers to enhance intellectual and cultural exchange

Activating cultural and literary exchange and strengthening intellectual ties between Syrian writers and their Brazilian counterparts was the focus of the meeting between the Chairman of the Arab Writers Union, Muhammad Al-Hourani, and the Brazilian Ambassador to Syria Andre Santos. The two sides reviewed ways to strengthen those ties.
During the meeting, the Arab Writers Union Chairman explained to Ambassador Santos the details of the Union’s work and the names of the periodicals it issues and their editors-in-chief, in addition to the literary societies and the Union’s branches in the governorates.
Dr. Al-Hourani noted the need to activate cultural work between the Syrian and Brazilian sides and printing books and translating them into the languages of the two countries, stressing the importance of translating some cultural books, such as what happened in the translation of the Alchemist by the Brazilian writer “Paulo Coelho.”
Brazilian Ambassador Santos, for his part, confirmed that this visit is the first to establish joint work between parallel parties in Brazil and Syria in terms of creating cultural, literary and intellectual exchange between the two sides.
Ambassador Santos pointed to the need to clarify the falsity of the negative propaganda spread by some people due to the nature of the war on Syria, which reached the Brazilian people so as to reverse the bad propaganda and reveal the positive truth that the Syrians have.
The ambassador proposed holding a symposium on books by Syrian writers in Brazilian universities, and he received a quick response.
He agreed with the Writers Union to start the cultural exchange, publication and translation, and the Union allocated the translator Munir Al-Rifai to follow up on relevant issues with the embassy.
