Syria, WFP discuss enhancing cooperation

Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Eng. Hussein Makhlouf, on Thursday discussed with the World Food Program’s (WFP) Regional Director for Middle East and Northern Africa Corinne Fleischer and the accompanying delegation, ways to enhance cooperation between the Syrian government and the program, current work plans, and possibilities for expanding the program’s work in Syria during the coming months.

Minister Makhlouf praised the cooperation between Syria and the World Food Program and its efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need, stressing the need to ensure the arrival of this aid and the adherence to the principles of humanitarian action and to avoid politicization practiced by some Western countries in this regard.

Minister Makhlouf also reviewed the economic and living conditions that the Syrian people are going through as a result of the unilateral coercive measures imposed on them by the United States and some Western countries. He called on the program and other humanitarian organizations operating in Syria to deal transparently and condemn these immoral measures that affect all aspects of daily life and basic services of the Syrian citizen.

Fleischer expressed her appreciation for the continuous cooperation between the Syrian government and the program, which will do its utmost to strengthen this cooperation and provide humanitarian assistance to the people in need. She also talked about the difficult conditions facing the region in general.

The meeting was attended by Representative and Regional Director of the World Food Program in Syria Kenneth Crosley, the WFP’s Financing Officer Muammar Marzouk, and the Protocol Officer at the Program’s office in Syria Elissar Al-Jundi.
