Syria Welcomes Appointment of De Mistura as UN Special Envoy

DAMASCUS, (ST)_ Syria welcomed the appointment of Staffan De Mistura as the UN special envoy to Syria.

“We wish that De Mistura’s approach will be based on objectivity and integrity,” Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs said in a letter sent to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Wednesday.

“His approach should be under the International law and principles of the United Nations Charter,” the Ministry added.

“At the forefront of the principles is respect of the national sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs and respect of the Syrians’ will and choices,” the Ministry concluded.

It is worth mentioning that the UN Secretary General appointed De Mistura as the UN special envoy to Syria on July 10th after the resignation of former envoy Lakhdar Brahimi last May.
