Syria, UNHCR discuss cooperation to deliver humanitarian aid to Syrians in need

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and the Commissioner of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi discussed during a meeting on Wednesday means of enhancing cooperation and coordination between the Syrian government and the UN agency to guarantee delivering humanitarian aid to Syrians in need and to provide as much support as possible to the Syrian citizens in the face of the current difficult humanitarian and economic circumstances.

Al-Moallem called on the UNHCR and all the organizations working in Syria to continuously coordinate with the Syrian government’s institutions in order to join efforts so as to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid to the citizens and implement vital projects that support the Syrians in the confrontation of the terrorist war and the unilateral coercive measures imposed on them.

 He also urged the international organizations to exert more efforts in order to expose the negative impacts of the coercive measures on the livelihood of the Syrian citizens, on the government’s ability to meet the requirements of facing the coronavirus pandemic and on the return of the displaced Syrians to their homes after the Syrian state has restored security to most Syrian territories.

On his part, Grandi talked about the UNHCR’s activities in Syria and the projects being implemented throughout the Syrian territory in cooperation with the Syrian government, stressing the need for more efforts to increase the number of refugees returning to their cities and areas of residence.

The UN official thanked the Syrian government for the support and facilities it provides for the work of the Commission in Syria, stressing the Commission’s readiness for permanent coordination with the Syrian government to ensure successful implementation of the projects away from politicization by some parties.
