DAMASCUS, (ST)-Minister of Social Affairs, Kinda al-Shammat and Director of the UN Regional Office for Women in Arab Countries Sameera al-Tuwaijari on Tuesday discussed economic empowerment of Syrian women and ways of supporting women, who lost their husbands and are running their families lone, as to help them face the critical circumstances created by the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, al-Shammat said economic empowerment of women, particularly those running families, is one of the Syrian government’s top priorities.
“An agreement is expected to be signed between the ministry and the UN on this kind of programs before the end of the year, the minister clarified, pointing out that cooperation will also include programs on building the civil society abilities regarding women and children rights and on providing different kinds of support for women who survived the war and who were victims of kidnapping crimes.
On her Part, al-Tuwaijari said focus during the meeting was put on ways to support Syrian women, particularly the poorest and most marginalized.
Methods of providing technical support by the UN women commission and ways of ending all forms of violence against women were also discussed during the meeting within the framework of a work program that lasts till the end of 2015, al-Tuwaijari added.
