DAMASCUS, (ST) – Deputy Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, Dr. Hayan Salman recently revealed that Syria submitted an application to join the Eurasian Union. Several meetings were held with the Russian and Belarusian side in this regard. The Eurasian Union includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
“During a meeting with the President of the Joint Higher Syrian-Russian Committee, Dmitry Rogozin, And Prime Minister Wa’il al –Halaqi, there was a significant and positive response by these countries and economic activities.” Dr. Salman said.
Dr. Salman indicated to the meeting, which was held under the guidance of the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade with the Federation of Syrian exporters in order to deepen trade relations with EU countries and establishing particular partnerships, especially that Belarus enjoys a high level of industrialization especially tractors, engineering machinery, etc. There is an idea to invite the Belarusians to see how to take advantage of their experience and deepen trade with them in all fields.
It is noteworthy that there are several forms of business cooperation between Syria and the countries of the world, including preferential agreements that manifested by giving preferential benefits of goods between Syria and other countries, which numbered more than 20 agreements. Among those agreements is the Arab Free Trade Agreement between Syria and all Arab countries, which focused on reducing tariffs to zero, as well as the free trade agreement with Iran, which entered into reality on 21-3-2011, and all goods were exempted from duties up to 4 percent.
