Syria to continue to support UNRWA to guarantee dignified life for the Palestinian refugees, says Miqdad

DAMASCUS, (ST)_Syria to go ahead with providing support to UNRWA to guarantee the continuity of a dignified life for the Palestinian refugees in Syria and to boost Syria-UNRWA cooperation, which is based on trust and belief in the importance of defending the Palestinian people’s rights.

This is what Deputy Minister of Expatriates and Foreign Affairs Dr. Faisal Miqdad said during his meeting today with Mr. Christian Saunders, the Acting Deputy Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Dr. Miqdad reiterated Syria’s condemnation of the Zionist entity’s bloody policies against the Palestinian people, including its inhuman attacks on Gaza strip and the continuity of building settlements in the occupied Palestinian lands.

“These policies contradict the international law and the UN resolutions,”  the Syrian official asserted, expressing satisfaction over the recent UN General Assembly’ decision to extend the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) until 2023.

This decision will help continue to support the cause of the Palestinian refugees and to ease their suffering in the light of the attempts and big pressures being practiced by Washington and Israel to eliminate the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, mainly the right to return to Palestine.

On his part, Mr. Saunders thanked the Syrian government for facilitating the work of UNRWA in supporting the Palestinian refugees and rehabilitating the schools and service centers which were destroyed by terrorist groups in Syria.

He also talked about efforts being exerted by UNRWA and the UN Secretariat to face the UNRWA’s financial crisis by depending on new resources through encouraging some donor countries to increase their support for UNRWA in order to go ahead with its human tasks towards the Palestinian refugees all over the world.
