Syria takes part in the 69th session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean  

The 69th session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean kicked off on Monday in Cairo under the slogan “Together for a Healthier and More Sustainable Tomorrow”. 

Syria’s delegation to the session, which will last until October 13th, is led by Health Minister, Dr. Hasan Al-Ghabbash. 

The event was opened with a sport activity at the Children’s Park in Cairo, as an initiative launched by the World Health Organization to enhance health in general as part of a healthy and sustainable future.  

The agenda of the session includes discussing the WHO’s Regional Director’s Annual Report 2021, partnership with the private sector to boost comprehensive health coverage, proposing the regional strategy for improving access to medicines and vaccines in the eastern Mediterranean region from 2020 to 2030. 

The session will also review lessons learned from dealing with COVID-19, other health issues that face people during disasters and emergency situations, a mechanism for setting out a regional agenda for building resilient health systems to advance universal health coverage and health security, supporting and strengthening the health system in every country of the Region and accelerating the prevention, control and elimination of communicable diseases  

The session will also discuss the regional strategy for fostering digital health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (2023–2027) in addition to several other topics. 

22 eastern Mediterranean countries are taking part in this event, both virtually and in person. 

In 2020, during the 67th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, Syria’s Health Minister Hasan Al-Ghabash was elected as the Regional Committee’s deputy chairman.
